Over the Roads, over the River
Kinofilm, 2014
140min
The suburbs of this European metropolis contain stories where the past shows up in traces left in the city as well as contemporary people, intersections, bends in the river where the future can sometimes be sensed as an imminent danger. It is in Riga, the city by the Baltic Sea where seven well-known film directors have created poetic stories about the city and its features. They show the city as it reveals itself outside the tourists’ limited field of vision they take the viewer to a city park that turns out to have been an old Jewish cemetery; they introduce people who are continuing in the old fisherman’s profession so rare in today’s cities; they follow the life in the city from the viewpoint of a cat and show an urban garden colony before it may be turned into a bloc of skyscrapers. Seven versions about Riga in a documentary directed by Sergei Loznitsa, Audrius Stonys, Ivars Seleckis, Jon Bang Carlsen, Jaak Kilmi, Rainer Komers, and Bettina Henkel.
